Through The Eye: photography as sculpture

Two Person Exhibition with Jacqueline Lipsky and Rafael Salazar.

Interview:  Jacqueline Lipsky

Artistic Medium?

I have over the years worked with painting, printmaking, photography, and collage. I have worked in most mediums and have combined most in my assemblage works.

How did you get started?

As early as grade school my teachers fortunately recognized my interest through my drawing and encouraged continuing with art.

Who or what are your influences?

The materials I have salvaged over the years.  Walking in the streets an object would catch my eye and I have to pick it up.  I am attracted to old photos, old cloth, and objects that have some sentimental and emotional attachment to me.

What inspires your work?

I have looked to certain artists for inspiration and stimulation.  Robert Motherwell, Jasper Johns, Anselm Kiefer, Jonnis Kounelis, Joseph Beuys, Robert Rauschenberg, Joseph Cornell, Leonore Tauney, Hannelore Baron.

How does Miami/South Florida influence your work?

The many mixed cultures and ethnicity of  Miami have affected my work.

How would you describe your work?

I developed an interest in photographic images, some produced with a digital camera, that have been manipulated through the computer and transformed. These images are deliberately obscured and I enjoy the scratches that mark the otherwise pristine surfaces.   I am also impressed with objects of fabric, paper and wood that have yellowed and frayed, and have survived the years, and bring a trace of time and age to the work.  I like wrapped and enclosed things that have a mystical nature filled with love and care.  I enjoy a strength and directness that many of the pieces seem to have.

I want it to have energy, like Boccioni’s movement, like Kiefer’s emotions and surfaces.  I want surprise and I don’t want you to walk away to quickly.

What has been the most unusual reaction to your work from the public?

The viewer has had mixed emotional responses because of my use of black as a color in my boxes.  They see the black as very dark, and I see it as another color.

What would you like to achieve as an artist?

I enjoy the emotional responses; I think for me that is what art should be about, not what I tell the observer to see.
