Inside Art: A Museum Exhibition Assembled on the Fly:

“Two curators from the Norton Museum of Art in West Palm Beach, Fla., plan to tour Art Basel Miami Beach, some 20 other fairs and roughly 850 galleries in the area.

Now WHAT? is expected to comprise a wide range of media, primarily by emerging artists. Until the final day of the selection process, the number of featured artworks will be open-ended, only limited by the size of the exhibition space at the Norton.

‘By way of an hour’s trip North on I-95, a selection of the most stimulating art in the world will be transported to West Palm Beach. This exhibition and the galleries we have now designated to Contemporary art and Photography signal the Norton’s renewed commitment to the art of our time,’ says Alswang. ‘This would not be possible without the generosity of Museum patrons who share my vision for this exceptional institution.’ Museum Trustee Sarah Ross Soter and her husband William have endowed the Photography curatorship as well as created an endowment for Photography programming and acquisitions. Museum Trustee Ruth and Ted Baum have supported the new full-time position of Curator of Contemporary art with additional support provided by Museum Trustee Ralph and Muriel Saltzman.

‘The prospect of the exhibition is both exhilarating and unbelievable,’ says Brutvan, ‘ … as you know museums work well in advance to organize complex projects.’ Stainback, continuing the thought: ‘On one hand, Cheryl and I can make quick, informed decisions. But in this case we are pulling together an exhibition that in the end will be full of surprises. Our biggest concern at the opening will be to appear not surprised ourselves.’

Now WHAT? will be on view at the Norton Museum of Art concurrently with Stare, an exhibition of photography exploring the most basic nature of the medium through works by Diane Arbus, John Coplans, Walker Evans, Vik Muniz, J.D.`Okhai Ojeikere, Ed Ruscha, and Taryn Simon.”
