Griffin Gallery calls for entries to the sixth edition of the Griffin Art Prize, an exhibition and studio award in painting and drawing open to UK based artists graduated since 2010.
An Exhibition and Award worth £10,000 for Emerging Artists

Designed to have a meaningful impact on the career of one emerging artist, the Griffin Art Prize provides the time, space and materials from Winsor & Newton, Liquitex and Conté à Paris to create new work in 2018, culminating in a showcase at Griffin Gallery, London in November.
The judges of the Griffin Art Prize 2017 are: artist Ansel Krut, Lindéngruppen owner and chairman, Jenny Lindén Urnes, Griffin Gallery head curator Becca Pelly-Fry, Elephant magazine editor Robert Shore.
The judges will be looking for excellence and innovation in painting and drawing. Twenty long listed artists will be announced in August and have their work featured on www.griffingallery.co.uk/
New for 2017 one outstanding candidate will benefit from the Griffin Art Prize at their location of choice within the UK. The winner will receive:
- a cash stipend of £5000
- £2000 of studio rent
- Materials of choice from Winsor & Newton, Liquitex and Conté à Paris up to value £3000
- A showcase of new work at the Griffin Art Prize shortlist exhibition at Griffin Gallery in November 2018
- A professional support programme including; mentoring from an arts professional, technical advice from chemists in the Innovation & Development laboratory, studio visits from head curator Becca Pelly-Fry and the Griffin Gallery team.

The prize is open to UK artists practicing in painting and drawing and graduated since 2010. Artists have until July 3rd 2017 to submit their applications of four recent artworks, artists’ statement and CV. There is a £15 application fee. 2017 Judging Panel :
Ansel Krut is a painter who lives and works in London. He was born in South Africa and studied at the University of the Witwatersrand (BA Fine Art, 1982) and at the Royal College of Art, London (MA Painting 1986). He has lectured at art colleges throughout the UK, including the RCA, and also at the National Gallery, London. In 2016 he was one of the judges for the John Moores Painting Prize. Recent Solo Exhibitions include Cut Flowers, Marlborough Chelsea, New York (2016), Verbatim Jerwood Gallery, Hastings (2014), Stuart Shave/Modern Art, London (2014), Marlborough Chelsea, New York (2013), Kunsthal Amersfoort, The Netherlands (2011), Stuart Shave/Modern Art, London (2010). Jenny Lindén Urnes is the owner and Chairman of Lindéngruppen, a family business based in Sweden, focusing on long-term development of industrial companies, including Winsor & Newton and Liquitex. Jenny is the Chairman of the Färgfabriken Foundation, a centre for contemporary art and architecture in Stockholm. With a passionate interest in art, she also chairs the jury for the Beckers Art Award. Established in 1987, this award has been given to several of Sweden’s most innovative and exciting young artists.
Becca Pelly-Fry is Head Curator for ColArt International. Becca took up post as Griffin Gallery Director in January 2013, and has since curated the majority of the exhibitions at the gallery including Water + Colour, Drawing into Sculpture, Two Truths, Selective Memories, and PERFECTIoNISM (Parts I and II). Becca originally trained as a sculptor at Northumbria University; after graduating she began her curatorial career as gallery manager and curator at The Biscuit Factory Gallery in Newcastle. Her career path then took a side step into public sector arts management, working as Operations and Events Manager for Durham City Arts, followed by three years as Arts Development Officer at Kensington & Chelsea Council and a similar role at Camden Council. Becca is now Head Curator for ColArt International, with responsibility for Directorship of Griffin Gallery and The Fine Art Collective global education programme, and advising the global Winsor & Newton and Liquitex teams on working with artists worldwide. Becca also sits on the selection panel for the Queen Elizabeth Scholarship Trust, which supports emerging British artists and craftspeople.
Robert Shore is the editor of Elephant magazine and the author of the books Post-Photography: The Artist with a Camera (Laurence King, 2014) and Beg, Steal and Borrow: Artists against Originality (Laurence King, 2017). He previously worked as deputy editor of Art Review magazine.
