Free & open to the public with Estate admission
The Deering Estate presents Intersections – a thought-provoking exhibition of site-specific works by more than two dozen notable contemporary artists that bridge past and present, nature and the man-made.
Part of the Deering Estate’s annual Festival of the Arts, Intersections offers visitors an opportunity to experience artworks inspired by crossroads, both physical and metaphorical, throughout the Estate’s varied and expansive outdoor and indoor environments. On the opening day, the exhibition is free and open to the public from 3:30 p.m to 10:00 p.m. and begins with a National Water Dance performance on the main lawn, Curatorial and Artist-Led Tours, and a Literary Lounge with readings in the Stone House Library.
The combination of natural beauty and historicity that form the Estate’s signature character provides an exquisite backdrop for works that ponder the theme of intersections.
“The nature of curiosity encourages us to move between boundaries, explore new materials and expand our knowledge base,” said Deering Estate Cultural Arts Curator Kim Yantis. “Whether through structural creations, discoveries within a historical context or interdisciplinary interactions, the creatives in this exhibition investigate the act or fact of intersecting through a broad range of research, practice and materials.”

Featured Works
Scarred Flat: Artist Jason Hedges presents a 1:1-scale recreation of a damaged shallow seagrass flat, Featherbed Bank, located between Black Point Marina and Elliott Key. By mapping this damage on land for viewers to navigate, the artist hopes to encourage stewardship of these submerged environments.
Walking with Satellites: Artist-scientist Skip Snow, with 25 years of experience working in the National Park Service, presents digital images of artist-created walkable pathways in Palmetto Bay and beyond. Made as a celebration of the “shape of a walk,” Snow enthusiastically shares his artist statement and community engagement strategy: “Walk. Be safe. Have fun. Get some exercise.”
Sand Bridge: Artist Ena Marrero bridges water and land in an earthwork that addresses the ever-changing landscape of S. Florida as well as the historic obstacles of walking in uncharted natural environments and overcoming barriers through her representative man-made temporary bridge.
Oculus: This sculpture by artist-designer team Laz Ojalde and Natalie Zlamalova serves as a viewing portal, placing the participant in a key location to witness the sunrise on Biscayne Bay.
Tillandsia Neos: Artist Jonathan Marc Rockford created an array of self-lighted, knit sculptures that describe the spaces between water, land and sky. Suspended in trees along the site, these neon-colored works relate directly to the hues in S. Florida’s vibrant sunsets.
Intersections will remain on display through June 4, 2016, 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m., and is free with Estate admission.
