Director of Spelman College Museum of Fine Art Wins Driskell Prize:
“ATLANTA – Andrea Barnwell Brownlee, director of the Spelman College Museum of Fine Art, has been named winner of the 2013 David C. Driskell Prize, reports Rosalind Bentley of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. The national award, worth twenty-five thousand dollars, is bestowed annually by the High Museum of Art in Atlanta to ‘a leader in the field of African-American art and art history.’ Past recipients include artist Rashid Johnson, Columbia University professor Kellie Jones, and Valerie Cassel Oliver, senior director at the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston.
Museum director Michael E. Shapiro stated that ‘Brownlee has helped engage thousands of visitors through highly significant exhibitions and acquisitions.’ Said Brownlee: ‘It was a humbling and exciting call. I can tell you that I’m being very thoughtful about how I will use the award. It will be to further my passion and love of the discipline.’”
