Parallel Universes Explored in Dance of the Cuckoos
Boca Raton, FL – Paired with The Art of Video Games, the Boca Raton Museum of Art presents the topsy-turvy world of acclaimed American artist, Michael Zansky from October 24, 2012 to January 13, 2013.
Calling upon his long career as master set painter for film and television, Zansky’s exhibition, Dance of the Cuckoos, features fantastic scenarios and landscapes inhabited by an absurd menagerie of slapstick comedians, giants of music and sports, pharaohs, mythological creatures, human-animal hybrids, and theoreticians of Western civilization.
“Michael Zansky: Dance of the Cuckoos considers the inscrutability of an unpredictable cosmos and questions the belief that we can control our world,” said Museum curator, Kathleen Goncharov.
Einstein famously proclaimed that “God does not play dice with the universe,” but in Zansky’s world, cosmic games of chance are constantly played and reality very strange indeed. Dinosaurs and vaudevillians gaze longingly at the horizon looking for the edge of the universe, often perilously perched on rickety boats on the high seas. His three-dimensional works literally spin. Objects and characters from his paintings gyrate on turntables and are magnified by funhouse-style Fresnel lenses, mounted on grip stands ubiquitous of the film industry. Like a video game designer, Zansky’s works challenge his audiences with puzzles, science, and storytelling.
