Standing before Carol’s work was astonishing. The visual impact of colors and forms paralyzed my understanding of traditional art. Solid colors were mounted and piled one next to the other like digital files in a hard drive, conquering the imagination within the future of digital art. Standing before this amalgam of computer generated images, collage, drawings, photography, objects and paint, I asked myself, “Can a woman of her maturity possibly produce such ground breaking work?” In her work, I discovered not only a new universe but the limitless possibilities of the art universe. I found incredible passion for intensity and risk; a fearless and creative human being constantly searching for new conquests. I saw joy and playfulness and at the same time a respectful attitude towards the profession of art making.
I could not resist the opportunity to dig deeper into Fryd’s work. I asked to see the various stages of the artistic development that had lead her to this point. From realism to abstract expressionism to portraiture, Fryd has grappled with large artistic questions. The answer has always been, an underlying strong sense of organization of space. Her lines do not simply delineate volumes , they become volumes Her lines are the life force of her paintings They travel, shaping and getting lost in the edges, trying to escape from the picture plane, but at the same time these forces of energy remain within her canvases and solidify that creation.
A pioneer of digital art, Fryd fearlessly incorporates the twenty first century into her art, pushing this new field of computer generated images to a cutting edge. In her combination of new technology with classical structure, Fryd has created a language of sublime constructivism uniquely her own.
Like a true pioneer of the 21st Century, Fryd creates a space for making art wherever she is. From a traditional light infused art studio, to her apartment, where her living room is usually transformed into a workspace for painting papers for collage, and one end of her kitchen into a still life to inspire nights of tireless spatial investigation, conditions do not limit her production. She produces the conditions. Serving as a beacon and a bridge of possibilities for future generations, Carol Fryd has a digital counter offer for twenty-first century art.
