Art and Culture Center of Hollywood’s catalog essay accurately describes Kevin Arrow’s “Things are good, but can always be better.” “Arrow’s work fuses his interest in obsolete media, archival tendencies, the ephemeral object, spirituality, music, and humor. He continually seeks to find the sublime within the mundane, and the mundane within the sublime experience as he investigates the interchangeability of both.”
Even though the solo exhibition filled two of the smaller exhibition spaces, those spaces were filled with a wealth of material: drawings, paintings, projections, slide shows, and a projected moving image. Kevin Arrow in some ways shows us how uniquely blessed we are to have an artist that is not dealing with some of the typical (and at times clichéd) subjects and issues of the day. Arrow looks into the past and brings us to a new, fresh place in the present. His sources are broad and one would have to wonder if the mandalas in his work reveal a much more spiritually oriented artist than we may be aware. He is what we see on the these walls.
One thing that we definitely see is a sense of play the infuses the subjects of his drawings. There is also the sense of humor that continually comes bubbling up to the surface. His approach is fresh and vibrant. We need more of that stuff.
