TIME + TEMP

Whew! Aren’t you glad you didn’t curate this exhibition? There was so much good work how can we say, “Leave out this, or leave out that?” That was the problem here, too much good work, and not enough space to show all of it without feeling overwhelmed. Yes, all of it was shown, but so many mentioned wanting a bit more breathing room.

The ambitious project of mounting a survey of painting in any region with the vibrant, talented, and prolific community of artists we have would make it pretty difficult. Just about any artist in this exhibition could probably pull off a solo exhibition. (Victor Muniz is having a solo exhibition in one of the smaller gallery spaces.)

This exhibition presents a survey of dynamic work by a selection of South Florida based artists who embrace and incorporate aspects of painting into their practice. A resurgence of painterly tendencies is currently taking hold among artists on a national even international level. Its growing appeal is also evident within the ever expanding contemporary art community in our region. [from exhibition essay]

There are several exhibitions up right now focusing on painting, specifically at Miami Art Exchange Exhibition Space, also Carol Jazzar Contemporary Art (which opened on 22 November). It was also interesting to hear painters voicing appreciation, since some feel painting is taking a back seat to conceptual work. I suspect many artists who focus on one medium feel that way.

At any rate, the selection of images here highlight some of the works your author found to his liking
